Etoile Sahel See Off Maranatha Fiokpo Challenge

Tunisia's Etoile Sahel defeated Togolese club Maranatha Fiokpo 3-0 in their third round, second leg tie on Saturday to claim a place in the group phase of the MTN CAF Champions League.

Etoile qualify with a 3-0 aggregate win following a 0-0 draw in the first leg in Lome two weeks ago.

The Tunisians got off to a flying start when Mohammed Aymen Chirmiti pounced on the rebound from Seif Ghazal's saved penalty to give Etoile a 15th minute lead.

Aymen Sultnani doubled the lead 10 minutes before the break and Afouane El Gharbi scored on the stoke of full time to complete the convincing score line.

Etoile join Al Ahly, Al Hilal, JS Kabylie, Esperance and Royal Armed Forces as teams who have qualified for the group stage so far.

Al Ittihad and Etoile du Congo, as well as ASEC Mimosas and Wydad Casablanca will play second leg ties on Sunday to determine the final two teams who will qualify for the group phase.

Togo's Maranatha, Tunisian club in barren draw

Togo's Maranatha, Tunisian club in barren draw
Tunisia's Etoile du Sahel and Maranatha de Lomé drew 0-0 in the African champions' League qualifying rounds first leg match on Sunday in Womé, some 135 km north-east of Lome.
Both clubs, after trying to avoid surprises in the return leg, did not manage to score a single goal in a highly thrilling tie with an acceptable technical level, involving professional players.

Togo's champion holder, Maranatha, which ousted Jaraaf de Dakar (Senegal) and later APR of Rwanda, have failed to secure an advantage at home against the mighty Etoile du Sahel, a Tunisian side that have shown a great football.

The return leg is expected to be tough for the Togolese club, the country's only team to reach this level of the continental tournament for about ten years.

Abbe Ibrahim has to sort out VISA problems before he can play

Abbe Ibrahim has to sort out VISA problems before he can play
Togolese strike Abbe Ibrahim joined a new MLS team called Toronto F.C. in the fall. But he must wait to sort out problems with VISA which won't allow him to get into Canada.

"Few folks outside of the New York area know much about the Togolese striker, but followers of the 2005 MetroStars will remember a speedy striker who showed a boatload of potential and who could have been a star if not for his poor finishing. Two years later, Ibrahim has shown up with an improved finishing touch to go with the speed.

After an impressive preseason with Toronto, Ibrahim appears poised to challenge the more well-known forwards on the roster for playing time, but a visa issue is keeping Ibrahim from entering Canada so it may take a while before he truly breaks out."
